Artist's Description
The rail tracks passing through Cottonwood South Dakota still look used but the ramshackle old grain elevator is obviously not one of the stops that any train might make. The heyday of Cottonwood was in the early 20th century, when there was a population of 191 in 1930. The Depression and Dust Bowl drove many off the land and the town never recovered. Today there are somewhere between 6 and 12 inhabitats, buy there are no businesses, the streets are unpaved, some of the buildings are faded and ramshackle. Visitors still arrive, spurred on by listings of Cottonwood in ‘ghost town’ books and websites.

About Joan Carroll

Wherever I go I want to walk every street, hike every trail, ride the bus or metro, climb every tower, walk around and through every monument, and then do it all over again when the light changes. In every place, light, mood, color, and...
