Artist's Description

I got up early to take photos in Madrid and once I was up, I wasn't going to be deterred by rain. Lucky for me you can stand under the porticos of the Plaza Mayor in Madrid and stay dry. Madrid is a city that parties late and sleeps late. At 7 am there was barely any activity on the plaza. Neverthless, The Plaza Mayor, a grand arcaded square in the center of Madrid, is very popular with tourists and locals alike. It is a great place to people-watch or sit at the cafes to eat and drink. Plaza Mayor's origins go back to 1576 but the plaza as it is today was not completed until 1790. Since its creation, the Plaza Mayor has been the center of festivities, bull fights, royal coronations and executions. These would be attended by as many as 50,000 spectators. It is still used today for public celebrations. The plaza is surrounded by three-story residentail buildings having 237 breathtaking balconies facing the plaza.
