Description
We spied this ringed kingfisher sitting on a fence wire on the side of the road in Costa Rica and tried to coast up quietly along the verge in order to photograph it. Imagine 10 people in a van trying to quietly open a sliding side door and all position themselves with long lenses to get a photo! There was a lot of ‘sorry’, ‘sorry’, and ‘sorry’ as we bumped one another with our lenses. The ringed kingfisher has an enormous bill, blue-gray with shaggy crest, white collar and reddish-brown belly. They are often conspicuous, searching the shallow water for fish from a prominent perch.
