Not far off the beaten path for tourists and close in to the central historic district of Madrid Spain stands the Colegiata de San Isidro. If you are looking as you pass by one of the entrance arches on Plaza Mayor you will see it down the hill. Life bustles around the church and the church is nestled right into Madrid's heart. Completed in 1664, it is named after and holds the remains of the patron saint of Madrid, Isidore the Laborer and his wife Santa Maria de la Cabeza. In 1885, with the establishment of the Diocese of Madrid, the temple became the provisional cathedral in this city and was Madrid's cathedral until La Almudena became the official cathedral in 1993. In 1936, the building was burned at the very beginning of the Spanish Civil War. After the war the temple was restored. The restoration slowly developed over two decades, trying to recover the original features, culminating in the 1960s with the rise of a new section on the towers of the facade.
