It was amazing to see the tiny yellow flowers growing right on the edge of Silex Spring in the Fountain Paint Pot area of Yellowstone National Park. Just inches away, the water is hot enough to completely prevent such plant life growth! Silex Spring is a small clear blue hot spring rimmed with white silica. When you see clear blue water in the thermal features, you know it’s very hot! The blue color is caused by scattering of the light rays, not by the thermophiles (heat-loving bacteria) that cannot survive in the extremely hot water. The white silica lining the spring is due to the hot water dissolving the volcanic rock, leaving behind the silica in the form of sinter.

Wherever I go I want to walk every street, hike every trail, ride the bus or metro, climb every tower, walk around and through every monument, and then do it all over again when the light changes. In every place, light, mood, color, and...
