Artist's Description
To use a colloquial phrase, the ancient site of Trajan’s Forum sits smack dab in the center of one of the busiest areas in Rome. A few blocks away in one direction is the busy Piazza Venezia and the Victor Emmanuel Monument while the Roman Forum, Colosseum and Palatine Hill are a short walk in another direction. Santa Maria di Loreto (left) and Santissimo Nome di Maria (right) are the two churches on the edge of the forum. Trajan's Forum was the last of the Imperial fora to be constructed in ancient Rome, built on the order of the emperor Trajan with the spoils of war from the conquest of Dacia, which ended in 106. The Forum was inaugurated in 112, while Trajan's Column was erected and then inaugurated in 113. The Forum consisted of a vast portico-lined piazza measuring 300 metres (980 feet) long and 185 metres (607 feet) wide, with markets on each side of the piazza. Today, the remains look like pieces of a giant jigsaw puzzle and convey little of the past glory of the site.
About Joan Carroll
Protected with PIXSY About Joan Carroll: I am a Fort Worth Texas-based outdoor photographer who feels at home while on the road...in Texas, in the US, around the world. My photographic goal is to travel the world in a curious yet respectful way, taking the time to see and understand the unique story of each place I visit. Wherever I go I want to walk every street, hike every trail, ride the bus or metro, climb every tower, walk around and through every monument, and then do it all over again when the light changes. In every place, light, mood, color, and...
