This monument is HUGE! Really, really huge! And WHITE, really really WHITE! No matter what vantage point you can find in Rome, this monument stands out more than any other. It is the Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II, or National Monument to Victor Emmanuel II, or Altare della Patria, or Altar of the Fatherland, or Il Vittoriano. Take your pick. It was built to honor Victor Emmanuel, the first king of a unified Italy. It was designed by Giuseppe Sacconi in 1885, but not completed until 1935. The monument if build of white marble and features stairways, Corinthian columns, fountains, an equestrian sculpture of Victor Emmanuel, and two statues of the goddess Victoria. The monument also holds the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier built after WWI. The Wiki page says the monument is 'glaringly white', which I hope I have captured here!

Wherever I go I want to walk every street, hike every trail, ride the bus or metro, climb every tower, walk around and through every monument, and then do it all over again when the light changes. In every place, light, mood, color, and...
