This wagon was found abandoned in a field in Fruita, Utah. The heat and the sun have beat down upon it for years so that now it is bleached out remnant of its former important self. White European settlers came to the area around what is now Capitol Reef National Park in the late 1800s, establishing many small towns along the Fremont River including Fruita. Fruita settlers recognized the abundance and accessibility of water and heat that reflected off canyon walls to the soil. An early settler named Nels Johnson planted the first orchards of apples, peaches, pears, plums, walnut, and almond trees. No more than ten families at a time lived in the area, the last ones leaving Fruita in the mid-20th century. Wagons like this were likely important pieces of farm equipment.
