Blustery clouds add some drama to the medieval walls of Avila. Most of the day had been drizzly but late in the day the sun came out. But the wind was howling sending the clouds scooting quickly across the sky.. The weather systems came in from over the hills just west of town so you had only a little warning as to what was coming. When the sun came through the clouds for a few minutes, it was like musical chairs, or more like musical tripod...you just plopped down the tripod wherever you were and started taking photos! Avila is notable for having complete and prominent medieval town walls, built in the Romanesque style. The walls were begun in 1090 and constructed during the 11th-14 centuries. They enclose an area of 31 hectares (77 acres) and have a perimeter of 2516 m (2752 yds) You can walk along the tops of the walls for perhaps 60% of the circumference, giving wonderful views of the town within and the countryside outside.
