A hot summer evening in Washington DC. At one end of the long Reflecting Pool and beyond the World War II memorial on the National Mall stands the Washington Monument. It was built to commemorate George Washington, who served as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army (1775–1784) in the American Revolutionary War and as the first President of the United States (1789–1797). It is built in the shape of an Egyptian obelisk, evoking the timelessness of ancient civilizations. The Washington Monument embodies the awe, respect, and gratitude the nation felt for its most essential Founding Father. It is my hope that we will once again have a time where our president is respected around the country and around the world.
