Description
Waved albatross are spectacular flyers and can fly indefinitely over open water by taking advantage of the differing wind speed at various altitudes. They spend the vast portion of their lives above the open ocean foraging for food except when rearing chicks. When foraging, the waved albatross finds places in the ocean where prey will be near this surface so that they don’t have to take off from the water’s surface.. The waved albatrosses will forage 10 to 100 km (6.2–62.1 mi) away from the place where the chicks are nesting to get food for them. The largest breeding ground for the waved albatross is on the island of Espanola in the Galapagos. The population of waved albatrosses on the Galápagos is protected by national park personnel, and the islands are also categorized as a World Heritage Site. The population of waved albatross is listed as critically endangered.
