If you are looking for a quick way to get to the top of the hill in Wellington New Zealand for views of the cityscape and harbor, the historic Wellington Cable Car is the way to go. The cable car rises 120 m (394 ft) over a length of 612 m (2,008 ft) and takes only five minutes. It is used by nearly a million people each year from commuters to students to tourists and has been in operation (with several upgrades!) for over a century. While this iconic funicular seems like a unique facet of Wellington life, a film in the cable car museum shows that many private individuals have installed their own personal trams in order to bypass long climbs up the hills to their homes.
