Once again, I was amazed to drive into yet another county seat in Texas and find such a splendid courthouse! This is Williamson County Courthouse in Georgetown TX, just north of Austin. Like most other courthouses in Texas, this is not the original courthouse. Williamson County was formed in 1849 and its first courthouse was built the following year. The current courthouse is considered the 5th courthouse, although some of the courthouses were renovations of previous courthouses on the same site. Williamson County's present Greek Revival Courthouse was envisioned in the summer of 1909 when the County Court concluded that the 30-year-old Victorian Courthouse built in 1877 was no longer safe. The corner�stone was laid Oct. 6, 1910 with Georgetown Masonic Lodge in charge of the elaborate ceremonies. The current courthouse, constructed in 1911, has had a tumultuous past, surviving three major renovations and many modifications including the demolition of its key architectural featur...
