Description
Getting up close and personal with Delicate Arch in Arches National Park near Moab Utah, a magnificent, free-standing arch recognized the world over. The lack of stone structures immediately around it makes the arch appear steadfast, stubborn, improbable, perilous, and frail but defiant. Maybe I absorbed some of that stubbornness as my plan to see this arch evolved! On the day I planned to visit, I had an 8:30 am meeting and the sun rose at about 7 so time would be tight. I first thought I’d go to the ‘easy’ overlook where you walk only 100 yards to see the arch from a mile away. Surely I could fit that in in the time allotted! Then I read that there was another viewpoint that was 0.5 mile walk with a slightly less obstructed view. So that became the plan…until….I was searching whether dawn was a good time to see the arch. I ran across a website describing the trail that went to the base of the arch. The trail is 3 miles roundtrip (with the advice to leave 2-3 hours for the hike) and many websites rated it as ‘difficult’. But one website claimed it’s only difficult if you go midday in the summer! So I became more confident that it was doable at dawn in November. Except for the tight time frame. Working backwards from my 8:30 meeting and allowing for the 30 min drive each way to get there and back, I figured I’d have to start the hike around 5:30 am and really haul butt if I wanted to spend even 30 min there! That was well before sunrise and I’d be alone. But I’d gone too far in my enthusiasm to give up so I figured yes, I could do it! The hardest step was the first one but I set off with my blinding tactical flashlight (which I actually had to shield a bit to keep from blinding myself). The trail was pretty well marked except for one area where I made a wrong turn. The tiniest bit of panic arose but all I had to do was retrace my steps and I found the markers that I had missed. The hike was well worth it and 30 minutes flew by all too fast. An hour more might have been more satisfying!
