Artist's Description
The Fountain Saint Sulpice or Fountain of the Four Bishops sits in the center of the Place Saint Sulpice in Paris France. The large public square was built as a tranquil garden in the Latin Quarter. The fountain was added between 1844 and 1848 and designed by the same architect who designed the tomb of Napoleon. This was considered a 'monumental fountain', or one that could be used for purely decorative purposes once hundreds of other fountains were constructed to improve the city's water supply. The theme of the fountain had to be religious since it was in front of the Church of Saint Sulpice. The final fountain had two distinct parts; the bottom fountain itself, composed of three octagonal basins and the top quadrilateral edifice. The second basin was decorated with sculptures of lions made of stone, which had the coat of arms of Paris; and the third had bowls with masks which spouted water.
