Description
In the Cinque Terre town of Manarola fishing is the town's lifeblood but tourism is making its impact. Early morning finds a few kayakers ready to take on the sea and enjoy the coast from another vantage point. The 'harbor' area is tiny and made only slightly less dangerous by a breakwater seen on the left so that this activity is only available in calm weather. Up above the water on the hillside, you can see the beginning of the hiking trail (closed in early 2016) to the next town, Corneglia. The white buildings in the upper right are the cemetery. A couple of centuries ago, it was decreed that cemeteries were health risks so that they began to be located outside of town. In Cinque Terre, that meant that the dearly departed rested forever with the best views! In fact, most of the 'classic' photos of Manarola at sunset are taken from this cemetery! Cinque Terre is a string of five centuries-old seaside villages on the rugged Italian Riviera coastline in the Liguria region of Italy. In each of the five towns of the region, colorful houses and ancient vineyards cling to steep terraces and fishing boats bob in harbors. The five towns are a hikers tourism resort paradise. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
