Description
As I drove to this lighthouse, I had a strong feeling of deja vu. The final mile or so of the drive brings you through the grounds of the Maine Maritime Academy and it was then that I realized that I had been here before, attending a summer conference nearly two decades ago! Little did I know or care at the time that there was a lighthouse right down the street! This is Dice Head Light in the town of Castine, Maine, USA. First established in 1829, the light was deactivated in 1937 and replaced by a skeleton tower 475 feet (145 m) to the south. When that structure was destroyed by a storm in 2007, however, the old light was reactivated in 2008. The lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a contributing property to Castine Historic District. "Once serving a heavy shipping traffic, it [Dice Head Light] is now just one more monument to the romantic and historic town of Castine." So wrote Robert Thayer Sterliing in 1935 in a book entitled Lighthouses of the Maine Coast and the Men Who Keep Them
