Description

I spied this great egret on a submerged log along the river’s edge in Fort Worth TX but when I trained my long camera lens on it, I noticed the mud-covered turtles at its feet. At first, the egret seemed to be helping one turtle that looked like it was stuck straddling the log. Then some other turtles joined the first one, and two of them were gazing up at the egret. Were they gazing in thanks and admiration or in wariness and panic? The third turtle decided it had had enough and slid off back into the river.
