Description
This is a walk through time to visit the Old Jewish Cemetery in Prague. It is one of the most hushed, inspiring, and ethereal places in all of Prague. It is thought to date from the first half of the 15th century, although there are claims that it is older. The number of people buried there is also uncertain. It has been estimated that there are approximately 12,000 tombstones visible, but there may be as many as 100,000 burials. According to Jewish law and tradition, Jews must not destroy Jewish graves. So when the cemetery ran out of space, more soil was added to create extra layers and the tombstones were taken out and placed on the new layer of soil. Consequently, the walled cemetery sits several feet above the surrounding street level.
