Description
One of the residents of Stewart Island New Zealand suggested to me that I take the Fern Gully hike ‘especially on a rainy day’ because the photography would be great. The water droplets on the ferns would be amazing. The jungle-y look WAS amazing and fascinating, seemingly improbable at such a high latitude (about 47 degrees S, about as far south as northern Michigan, Maine, PEI and Cape Breton Island are north). But with the heavy rain it was a mudfest. Anyplace there wasn’t several inches of water (as in the bottom of the photo), there was thick clay-ey mud. Unless you really enjoyed getting down and dirty, kneeling or lying on the ground to get up close was out of the question. In the end, I didn’t end up with many photos!

I remember watching and loving the movie Fern Gully back many many years ago, and the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw this photo, before I noticed the title, was that it looked like something out of a fairy tale. Guess I was right. Beautifully captured! L/F
