Description
I was just wandering around St Augustine, sweltering in the late summer heat, when I ran across the First Memorial Presbyterian Church. Visiting hours extend to 4 pm, and (my luck of course) I arrived around 4:10. So I just enjoyed the beautiful exterior. From all reports, it's a spectacular church inside too! Henry Flagler built the First Memorial Presbyterian Church in memory of his daughter, Jennie Flagler Benedict, who died in 1889 from complications from childbirth. Designed in the Second Renaissance Revival style and inspired by St Mark's Basilica in Venice, the church was built utilizing a novel construction technique. This building method utilizing poured concrete mixed with crushed coquina stone was utilzed in Flagler's Ponce de Leon Hotel and Alcazar Hotel, both of which last were designed by the same firm. He presented the magnificent Venetian Renaissance style structure to the First Presbyterian Church. Upon moving into the new building in 1890, the congregation took the name Memorial Presbyterian Church in honor of their benefactor. The remains of Henry Flagler lie beside those of his first wife, Mary, and his daughter, in the mausoleum there.
