You start to get peeks of the cathedral as you walk up the narrow streets of Segovia. Literally up, since Segovia's cathedral sits in the Plaza Mayor, one of the highest points in the city. Finally you reach the Plaza Mayor and there it sits, fronting directly onto the plaza! Segovia Cathedral, or Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion y San Frutos Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic church. Begun in the 16th century but not finished until 1768, Segovia Cathedral is the last Gothic cathedral to be built in Spain. It stands on the spot where Isabella I was proclaimed Queen of Castile. Affectionately called la dama de las catedrales, Segovia Cathedral has a supremely Gothic exterior combined with a surprisingly bare interior, but contains numerous treasures.
