Artist's Description

Brussels' town hall towers over the Grote Markt or Grand Place and is its architectural masterpiece. It makes you oooohhhh and aaaahhhhhhh when you first walk into the square and see it for the first time! The Town Hall (French: Htel de Ville, Dutch: Stadhuis ) is a Gothic building from the Middle Ages and occupies the entire southwest corner of the Grand Place. The spire was built in 1449 and stands 315 feet (96 m) high. They say it is slightly crooked! Atop the spire stands a 5-metre-high gilt metal statue of the archangel Michael, patron saint of Brussels, slaying a dragon or devil. The tower, its front archway and the main building facade are conspicuously off-centre relative to one another. According to legend, the architect upon discovering this "error" leapt to his death from the tower. More likely, the asymmetry of the Town Hall was an accepted consequence of the scattered construction history and space constraints. So photographers have to forget about having things...

Joan Carroll

Protected with PIXSY About Joan Carroll: I am a Fort Worth Texas-based outdoor photographer who feels at home while on the road...in Texas, in the US, around the world. Although travel and photography were dual interests from a young age, the coming of the digital camera provided undreamed of opportunities and unleashed previously untapped creativity. My photographic goal is to travel the world in a curious yet respectful way, taking the time to see and understand the unique story of each place I visit. Wherever I go I want to walk every street, hike every trail, ride the bus or metro, climb every tower, walk around and through every monument, and then do it all over again when the light changes. In every place, light, mood, color, and...
