Artist's Description
Brussels' town hall towers over the Grote Markt or Grand Place and is its architectural masterpiece. It makes you oooohhhh and aaaahhhhhhh when you first walk into the square and see it for the first time! The Town Hall (French: H�tel de Ville, Dutch: Stadhuis ) is a Gothic building from the Middle Ages and occupies the entire southwest corner of the Grand Place. The spire was built in 1449 and stands 315 feet (96 m) high. They say it is slightly crooked! Atop the spire stands a 5-metre-high gilt metal statue of the archangel Michael, patron saint of Brussels, slaying a dragon or devil. The tower, its front archway and the main building facade are conspicuously off-centre relative to one another. According to legend, the architect upon discovering this "error" leapt to his death from the tower. More likely, the asymmetry of the Town Hall was an accepted consequence of the scattered construction history and space constraints. So photographers have to forget about having things...
