Description
La Giralda is one of the most recognizable and emblematic structures in the city of Seville Spain. It is likely the first place that every visitor goes to, as it was for me. Moreover, it is a magnet that draws you back many times during your visit....to see it in the morning light or the evening light, listen to the bells, to watch the activity in the square below. On this evening, the people came out as the sun went down! The Giralda is a bell tower of the Seville Cathedral in Seville, Spain. It was originally completed on March 10, 1198 to serve as built as a minaret during the Moorish period. After Seville was taken by the Christians in 1248 during the Reconquista, the city's mosque was converted into a church. The top section of the Giralda fell in a 1365 earthquake and was replaced with a cross and bell. By 1401 the city began building the current adjacent cathedral and the new cathedral incorporated the tower as a bell tower, completing the top in a Renaissance style. The Giralda was registered in 1987 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The tower is 104.1 m in height and remains one of the most important symbols of the city, as it has been since medieval times. A replica of the Giralda stands in the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri. Other buildings in the US that were inspired by the design include the clock tower of the Railroad Depot in Minneapolis, the Freedom Tower in Miami, Florida, built in 1925, the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, Florida, built in 1926, the Wrigley Building in Chicago, built in 1920, and the Terminal Tower in Cleveland, built in 1930.
