Description
These columns form part of the colonnade of Saint Peter's Square in Rome. The colonnade was designed by the Baroque architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini. It is composed of 284 columns in a quadruple row, enclosing the forecourt of St Peter's Basilica. The columns are 56 feet high in Doric style. The columns enclose the elliptical area of the piazza, symbolically embracing the visitor in "the maternal arms of Mother Church" according to Bernini. Topping the columns are Bernini's 140 favorite saints, each 10 feet tall.
