Description
One thing I remember learning as a kid in school was about the “leaning tower of Pisa’. I think my mental picture was this leaning tower in the middle of a field somewhere where it was the one and only focus of attention. While it probably is the biggest focus of attention in the Piazza dei Miracoli (Field of Miracles), it certainly isn’t the only monumental building. And not even the largest. If you carry in your head the idea that it’s out in a field somewhere, it’s a bit jarring to see it sharing the piazza with a huge cathedral and the largest baptistery in Italy! Nevertheless, it draws you in. It draws you to the base where you can clearly see the lean of the foundation. From this vantage point, you see what should be the horizontal lines in marble tilting down to the right. The other jarring 21st century sight is the armored vehicle and machine gun-toting soldiers at the base of the tower. The tower is the bell tower for the cathedral and its construction started in 1173, after that of the cathedral in 1063 and the Baptistery in 1152. The lean in the tower started almost immediately due to the soft ground underneath and it worsened even as construction continued into the 14th century. It gradually increased until the structure was stabilized (and the tilt partially corrected) by efforts in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. It’s a bit comical that authorities did not want to remove the tilt entirely due to the role of the tower in the tourism industry in Pisa! In 1987, the whole square (Baptistery, Cathedral, Tower, and Cemetery) was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

How did you get this capture without tons of people?
Joan Carroll replied:
about 7:30 am, I was surprised that it wasn't really that early but still very uncrowded
