After the shortest of visits a few years ago, my appetite was whetted for another visit to Natural Bridge National Monument in Utah. Even though I was driving from Mexican Hat Utah to Torrey Utah, I was able to spend a few hours here. Owachomo Bridge is the smallest of three major bridges in the park with a height of 106 feet and a span of 180 feet. This seems surprising since you can more easily walk to this arch from the carpark than some of the others, so the illusion is that it is much larger. Owachomo means "rock mound" in Hopi and is named after the rock formation on top of the east end of the bridge. Natural Bridges National Monument is located about 50 miles (80 km) northwest of the Four Corners boundary of southeast Utah. In 1904, the National Geographic Magazine publicized the bridges and the area was designated a National Monument April 16, 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt. It is Utah's first National Monument.
