Description
I had been wanting to photograph the Puerta de Alcala at night for quite awhile but for one reason or another never made it. It was too cold, it was too windy, sunset is too late, my flight the next day was too early, I'd rather sit at a cafe...you name it, I procrastinated. You have to stand on a very busy street corner and time your shots during the changes of the traffic lights. It takes a few cycles of the lights to get everything right. And then of course it keeps getting darker and darker as the dusk deepens so you have to keep shooting. You get the picture. It's not just a quick shoot! It's easier if you have someone to stand and chat with in the interim but this time I didn't. Still, I'm glad I finally made it! Classic monuments and buildings are always spectacular lit up at night and this was no exception. The Puerta de Alcala, designed in 1764, is a Neo-classical monument in the Plaza de la Independencia in Madrid, Spain. It stands near the city center and close to the main entrance to the Parque del Buen Retiro. Lights were added to the monument only in 2001 at the same time the flower gardens were added. The Puerta de Alacal is classified as a National Monument in Spain.
