Description
I drove up to the historical Randall County Courthouse on a hot June afternoon. Blazing hot sun, not a bit of shade in sight. Sometimes you can't pick the time of day you get to take a photo! If I could have taken photos from the air conditioned car I would have. This is the (Second) Randall County courthouse in Canyon TX, built in the Texas Renaissance style. It was curious to me that so few cars were parked around the courthouse but as I walked closer it was clear that this was a building under renovation. The exterior was beautiful but a peek in the windows revealed piles of construction materials. The historical marker on the building is uncharacteristically uninformative and seems to have some serious grammatical issues. Nevertheless, it does reveal that the cornerstone was laid in 1908 and the building opened in 1909 on the eve of the opening of West Texas State University. There was a renovation done in 1945 in which the clock tower was removed! It has been replaced in the recent renovation. In addition a 1968 courthouse attached to the north side (which I believe is the side shown in this photo) was demolished. The exterior renovation was rededicated in 2010. Canyon is located only 14 miles south of Amarillo. It was known as Canyon City until 1911, named after the nearby Palo Duro Canyon. The current courthouse is a former Wal-mart.
