Description
The church called Hallgrimskirkja Church (Lutheran) is one of the best know landmarks in Reykjavik Iceland (but it’s not the ‘cathedral’!). So…after pouring rain all morning it seemed every tourist in the city headed to the church once the rain stopped. So it took a bit of patience to get this photo! One of the best fun facts about the church was designed to resemble the basalt lava flows found in Iceland‘s natural landscape, especially the basalt columns around Svartifoss waterfall. Some websites say it too ‘over’ 40 years to build but in the contest of other large churches/cathedrals around the world, 40 years is pretty quick! Think Sagrada Familia in Barcelona…or any of the cathedrals of old that took hundreds of years. Another website says it was initially criticized as being too old fashioned! The statue in front is of Leif Erikson and was donated to Iceland by the US in 1930 (and thus predating the cathedral) commemorating the 1000th anniversary of Iceland's parliament at Þingvellir in 930 AD.
