Description
In northwestern Sicily between Palermo and Trapani lies the archeological park of Segesta. When you visit, you are first taken to visit the Greek theater up on a hill, after which you can either take the bus or walk to the Doric Temple down in the valley. When we visited, the spring wildflowers were in wild profusion covering all the hillsides, so naturally we decided to walk. Even with the wildflowers to enjoy along the way, the Doric temple keeps drawing you in. It was built between 430 and 420 BCE and stands in almost perfect condition today. Perfect condition, that is, considering it was never finished in the first place! Among other things, the temple lacks any ornamentation, altar or deity dedication, and was never roofed over. War between Segesta and Selinunte is thought to be the cause.
