We were sitting on the back patio enjoying a summer late afternoon when we spied what looked like a juvenile black-chinned hummingbird flitting around the flowering bushes and trees in the yard. Naturally, I didn’t have my camera but decided to at least go get it and set it up, hoping it might stick around for awhile. Luckily for me, it hung around our yard for about 15 minutes but was flitting around endlessly and difficult to catch on camera. Finally, I was able to lock focus on it for a few seconds as it fed on the Turk’s cap (Malvaviscus arboreus). The Turk’s cap is well known for attracting hummingbirds as well as butterflies. It’s sometimes called a sleeping hibiscus because the petals never fully open.
