Description
The Alcazar in Segovia Spain is probably more photogenic from afar than from up close, and today serves as a museum. But take a short hike up to the rooftop to get a sweeping view of the historic city center of Segovia dominated by the cathedral. The Segovia Cathedral was the last Gothic cathedral built in Spain (1525-1577), at a time when Renaissance architecture was beginning to flourish in the rest of Europe. It is considered a masterpiece of Basque-Castilian Gothic architecture and is known as "The Lady of Cathedrals". Juan Gil de Hontanon, Rodrigo Gil de Hontanon, and other masters of Spanish architecture worked on the construction. It was consecrated in 1768 and is 105 meters long, 50 metres wide and 33 m high in the nave. Segovia is one of Spain's most famous historic cities. It is located in the Castilla and Leon region less than a half an hour's journey from Madrid on the high speed AVE train from the Chamartin station. The collection of historical monuments, their conservation together with its beauty make this an impressive city to visit. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1985.
