Description
This is Sherwood Point Lighthouse, located near Idlewild WI, outside of Sturgeon Bay and in door County. It was 'late' in the day when I had the opportunity to visit, late that is for sunlight in a Wisconsin winter. I went to the Door County Maritime museum and got there about 10 minutes before closing time. But the volunteer at the museum kindly gave me directions to the Sherwood Point Lighthouse. I could make it there before dark....maybe....if I wanted to make the drive. I seem to remember it might have been 10 miles. BUT it was snowing....hard. At least hard enough to scare someone who never drives in the snow. Snowing and almost dark.....hmmmm.....and not to mention the lighthouse is situated on private property so all you can do is drive up the driveway and stand there and look at it from a distance! Since I had gone to WI to see lighthouses, in the end, I went. I was scared driving the whole way and I was scared I would get stuck in the driveway once I got there. My windshield wipers were iced over and just scraping across the windows. The drive seemed endless but I got there, stood at the entrance, looked at it, took a few photos, tried to get some of the huge chunks of ice off my wipers, and headed back to Sturgeon Bay, my B&B, my hot tub bathtub, and a beer. Sherwood Point Lighthouse was officially established in 1883. It is situated on the west side of the north entrance to Sturgeon Bay. The Sturgeon Bay and lake Michigan Ship Canal and Harbor Company was formed in the erly 1870s to create a canal between Sturgeon Bay and Lake Michigan, in the hope of reducing the length of the shipping route into Green Bay. this lighthouse was the last manned lighthouse on the Great Lakes and became automated in 1983. Today a light still shines here however, and the Coast Guard continues to maintain the lighthouse and grounds.
