Description
Climb over 500 steps within the dome of St Peter's Basilica and be rewarded by the view of St Peter's Square. The large elliptical square provides a fitting approach to the church. It was designed by Bernini and built between 1656 and 1667. There are two beautiful fountains in the square, and also a 25.5 meter tall obelisk in the center dating from the 13th century BC Egypt. The square in outlined by the monumental colonnade, its open arms symbolically welcoming the world into the Catholic Church. The Via della Conciliazione leads to the Castel Sant' Angelo in the distance.
