Description
The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore was one block from our Bed and Breakfast in Rome so I was able to spend several mornings photographing both the interior and exterior of the church. This church is the largest Roman Catholic church in Rome dedicated to Mary, the mother of Jesus. While there are many many other churches in Rome dedicated to Mary, the importance of this church is indicated by the fact that the church is located in Italian territory but is owned by the Vatican and enjoys extraterritorial status similar to that of foreign embassies. The building is patrolled internally by police agents of Vatican City, not by Italian police. The church is often called Our Lady of the Snows after an alleged miracle whereby snow fell in Rome in August of the year 432. The church is one of Rome's oldest and best preserved. The photo shows some of the detail of columns of the facade facing the Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore.
