Description
You can see the bad weather coming in on the far left. That's the kind of afternoon it was when I arrived in Avila, rain, sun, rain, sun, with only a short warning before any change took place. But in the moments when the clouds cleared, the late afternoon sunlight on the old town walls was glorious! I was totally jet lagged but I knew the forecast for the next day was also rainy so I wanted to take as much advantage of any sunshine and blue sky as I could. Avila is notable for having complete and prominent medieval town walls, built in the Romanesque style. The walls were begun in 1090 and constructed during the 11th-14 centuries. They enclose an area of 31 hectares (77 acres) and have a perimeter of 2516 m (2752 yds) You can walk along the tops of the walls for perhaps 60% of the circumference, giving wonderful views of the town within and the countryside outside. Avila has been described as 'perhaps the most 16th-century town in Spain', and it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.
