Description
Just a little north of the heavily touristed area around the Royal Palace in Madrid lies Western Park, or Parque del Oeste. Most people don't make it that far. It's a nice place for a stroll, to enjoy some green space and relative quiet, but is not high on tourist sights or activities except for the low key Temple of Debod. Before the 20th century, the land that the park currently occupies was the main landfill of the city. Landscape architect Cecilio Rodriguez converted the area into a large English styled garden, which officially opened in 1905. It was recreated during the 1940s after the park was damaged and neglected during the Spanish civil war.
