Description
Just a pretty little puffball, and only about 15 feet from the safari vehicle. But even with a telephoto lens, it didn’t take up much space in the viewfinder. Surely it would be easy to hop out and get a little closer for a photo. Just 10 seconds, that’s all. Think again. In retrospect I felt bad to have asked since regardless of…anything…a rifle-toting guide must be with you if you exit the safari vehicle for any reason. This isn’t a theme park. So I took three shots in record time and felt properly abashed! This plant goes by many names including blood lily, ball lily, fireball lily and blood flower. It’s about 20” high and the flower about 6” across, consisting of up to 200 individual flowers. It’s native to most of sub-Saharan Africa and blooms in October-November.
