Description

This is the white water lily, common in tropical to southern Africa. It thrives in shallow water, such as we saw along the banks of the Chobe River in Botswana. The open flower attracts many insects that the African jacana finds appealing. Even knowing that the water lily serves as a brief home for the insects before they get eaten, it is still amazing to see the masses of insects crawling over the surface of the flower when you zoom in with a long lens! Luckily I happened upon one with only two insects easily noticeable.
