Description
In the autumn, Absecon Lighthouse in Atlantic City NJ is closed two days a week. Naturally, that was when I happened to be in Atlantic City. So all I could do was peer through the gate and wish. Wish that I could climb the lighthouse, since it is the tallest one in NJ at 171 feet! It is also the third-tallest masonry lighthouse in the US. It was first lit on January 15, 1857 and was deactivated in 1933. The light still shines every night, but it is no longer an active navigational aid. The lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Historic American Buildings Survey, and the New Jersey Register of Historic Places. Not so fun fact: The beautiful lighthouse is nearly eclipsed by the modern high-rise buildings which takes away from the allure and romance of the lighthouse. Sadly, it also is not in the greatest part of town. Happily though, it is lovingly maintained! Maybe it will be still be standing tall when some of the casinos have crumbled.
