Description
The American avocet takes elegance to new heights with its long graceful slightly upturned bill. The coloration in this bird is typical of an immature or non-breeding adult American avocets typically feed in open and fairly shallow water (less than 8” deep) sweeping their bills from side to side as they forage for crustaceans and small fish. Photo taken in the wetlands of Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge in north Texas.
