Description
It seems like no matter where you are in Segovia, you look up to see the spires of the Segovia Cathedral! I imagine that this served to emphasize the power of the Catholic church 'back in the day'. Walking up to Plaza Mayor from the aqueduct, you get your first tantalizing glimpse of the cathedral spires over the tops of the other buildings, then you see the entire facade across the Plaza Mayor. Walking many of the back streets, the cathedral seems to hover above you. The cathedral is truly interwoven into the life of the city. Begun in the 16th century but not finished until 1768, Segovia Cathedral is the last Gothic cathedral to be built in Spain and is considered to be a masterpiece of Basque-Castilian Gothic. It stands on the spot where Isabella I was proclaimed Queen of Castile.
