Description
As I entered the Celebration Room at the Alcazar in Seville Spain, I thought that the history hidden in these walls is the stuff of history books to most Americans. European history is a confusing melding of cousins marrying cousins, and there are just too many Elizabeths, Isabellas, Charleses, Ferdinands, Henrys, and Georges. But when you walk into this hall it comes to life, as it is only one Charles (Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor), and one Isabella (his cousin) of Portugal. Their marriage on 10 March 1526 united Spain and Portugal at the height of Spain's power in the new world. In this room they celebrated their wedding reception...nearly 500 years ago! Tiles of yellow, blue, green, and orange line the room, some decorated with whimsical human figures with vase-like bodies. Also in the tiles are cherubims, chandeliers, animals, baskets of flowers, fruits, and the portrait of a couple which have been identified as Carlos V and Isabel of Portugal. On the day I visited, the room glowed with the morning sun coming in the large doors showing off the Renaissance-inspired figurative motifs painted on the flat square tiles. This is another example of the history of fabulous tilework in Seville! The Alcazar is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
