Description
As long as I was headed from here to there on a road trip in Texas, I figured I ought to stop at a few historic county courthouses on the way. This is Childress County Courthouse, in the Panhandle town of Childress. Childress County has had three courthouses:
1887, 1891 and this one, built in 1929. This courthouse was a Public Works Administration project, another reminder of some of the wonderful buildings and projects that came out of that era. It was designed in the Moderne style by Amarillo architects Townes & Funk who designed several other courthouses in the Panhandle. The Texas Historical Commission website states that it is a "4-story limestone building with jail facilities on fourth floor. Aluminum frame windows set in vertical relief emphasize the vertical. Entrance loggia features modern fluted columns (no capitals). The overall building is made of smaller rectilinear parts giving it a boxy character. Top of walls feature a frieze in relief. Transoms feature decorative aluminum grates. Cost $250,000." Fun fact: The town and county of Childress are named after George Campbell Childress - author of the Texas Declaration of Independence.
