Description

Thinking that the cathedral in Salamanca Spain likely presented the most dazzling architecture in the city, I was totally unprepared for the WOW factor of the Convento de San Esteban! Outside and inside, it was spectacular. As described elsewhere, it has an ‘extraordinary altar-like façade’ in the Plateresque style. Unlike many churches in Europe, it isn’t wedged into a narrow street in the central city but features a large plaza in front from which to admire the façade. All in all, I enjoyed visiting San Esteban at least as much, if not more, than the cathedral. Historically, St Dominic wanted his friars to be present in Salamanca soon after the founding of the university in 1218 but it wasn’t until 1256 when they established themselves at this location, albeit in a much smaller church than the present-day structure. Christopher Columbus is said to have stayed at the Convent (about 1486-1487) where he found the support that would be later given to him by the Board of Professors of Salamanca University. San Esteban has a long history and its fortunes have varied tremendously along with political and social history. At present the community consists of about thirty Dominican Friars devoted to study, preaching, and teaching Theology.
