It was always a thrill to see a Galapagos penguin, the only penguin that lives north or the equator. This penguin was photographed on Santiago Island (Galapagos Islands, Ecuador). The cool waters of the Humboldt and Cromwell Currents allow it to survive despite the tropical latitude. It is one of the smallest species of penguin in the world, averaging only 19-20” tall and weighing around 5.5–9.9 lb. It is currently the rarest penguin species and is listed as endangered.
