Description
Godafoss, a spectacular waterfall in northern Iceland, means ‘waterfall of the gods’. The gods must have been angry the first time we visited: the wind was blowing about 25-30 m/sec, which doesn’t sound too bad until you convert it to mph (56-67 mph) at which point it sounds downright scary! But, crazy tourist photographers that we were, we were determined to try to take some photos anyway. Being blown over by the wind twice should have stopped us in our tracks, but….it didn’t! Naturally we wanted to go back a second time when the wind had abated, and we could appreciate the beauty. To view the falls, you can hike up the ‘left’ side (opposite) where the walkway was groomed and easily navigated, or the ‘right’ side which was snow-and ice-covered. Naturally we chose the ‘right’ side. Sometimes the snow was crusted over and other times you broke through up to the hip. Then you picked your way over a field of big ice chunks to arrive at this viewpoint. Here we were somewhat enveloped by the mist from the waterfall, seemingly rising up all around us. The waterfall flows over a 30-meter wide horseshoe-shaped rock that rises in the center separating the waterfall in two. One part is about 9 meters and the second 17 meters high. According to legend the Lawspeaker Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði made Christianity the official religion of Iceland in the year 1000. After his conversion Þorgeir threw his statues of the Norse gods into the waterfall. Thus did the waterfall derive its name.
