Description
“Only males have horns” Check. “…which spiral and can reach six feet”. Check. “Only males have an abundant fringe of hairs from the chin down the neck.” Check. “They possess between 4 and 12 vertical white stripes along their torso.” Check. “The head tends to be darker in color than the rest of the body, and exhibits a small white chevron which runs between the eyes.” Check. I conclude this is a Greater Kudu (Tragelaphus Strepsiceros). It is an antelope native to eastern and southern Africa, which is where I wish I had seen it! Instead I was at a wildlife center in Texas where you drive around and keep your eyes open and cameras ready for animal spotting. The horns of the Greater Kudu don’t begin to grow until the animals are between 6-12 months and it takes another year or so before they get the first complete spiral. A full 2 ½ spirals is reached at about age 6. So this guy isn’t quite there yet.
